There was an international flavour to the Square Wheels Sunday cycle this morning as cyclists came from as far away as Eglish, Dungannon, Argentina and Sydney to enjoy the cross border spin. The Rushmere Man led the charge fresh from the club charity spinathon in Rushmere on Saturday. He had 2 manikins dressed in the new Square Wheels kit parked in the Square for all to see. Passersby thought the manikins were Mr and Mrs Ridley while some thought they were the Schlecks.
The Rally Man was the first celebrity on show. He had arrived straight from the podium in Argentina still smelling of champagne, to be under the tree in the Moy Square. He was joined by The Studio Cycle Men who had made the decision to cycle outdoors for a change and to savour the smells on offer around Glasslough and Monaghan rather than listen to the loud Nathan Carter music that they usually spin along to.
At the front of the peloton the Rushmere Man was joined by the Igloo Man. He has been feeling better after his surgery and was looking well in his new figure hugging RUC green kit. The Fegan was there too closely followed by The Master Carpenter and The Legal Drug Man.
As the peloton snaked through Tullysaren The Legal Drug Man commented that only money people live in the area. This was quickly contradicted by the Pharmacist who had bother keeping the Euros from falling out of his pocket. The main chat was about the Giro and the crashes that had happened over the last week or so. The Pharmacist however was smiling from ear to ear happy about Arsenal winning the FA Cup. He told everyone about how he sat on the sofa yesterday in his full Arsenal kit cheering on his heroes just like the old days.
Crocodile Dundee appeared to be enjoying his cycle with the club. He had been brought all the way from Sydney by his cousin Sam’s Yer Man. SYM was showing him how to swerve all over the road but The Croc didn’t appear to be interested. SYM had made sure he had given his cousin his heavier winter bike and had let a bit of air out of the tyres to slow him down.
The route for the day had been specially selected by PeeGee. He had studied it and made sure the peloton stuck to it even though the Drug Seller wanted to go on his own route. PeeGee kept shouting out the directions in Italian as he was still suffering from an Italian hangover. He was looking well in his new cycling cap that he was lucky enough to win in the Fantasy Cycling competition.
Once the group reached Glasslough those wanting the shorter miles had a wee cup of coffee and went home while those wanting the longer PeeGee route headed on for Monaghan and their fry stop.
From Monaghan all hands headed for the hills towards Keady. There wasn’t much chat as the Igloo Man stayed at the back ensuring that no-one was left behind. The MC promised to look at a new diet as he didn’t climb the hill as fast as he would have liked saying that he is going to eat even more bacon the next time.
The now customary sprint from Armagh to the Moy saw the Legal Drug Man show everyone a clean pair of pedals despite close attention from one of the Studio Cycle Men.
The most notable performance of the day however was from the Social Cyclist. She had stayed with the peloton for the whole ride showing no difficulty at all with the longer miles, smiling as she went practising her Italian for her visit to the Giro next week. She didn’t even contemplate stopping at a pub. Well done to her!
It had been a super spin of 52 miles at a pace to suit all, thoroughly enjoyed despite the drizzle. Bellissimo!
